Commitment: All In For Love

Padma Gordon

In our wonderful Rare Mothers in Relationship Workshop, we examined the question, "What I am already doing in my relationship to grow kindness and understanding? And what can I do to expand this in my relationship?" When we pondered these questions in meditation, journaling and discussion, what came out was that kindness and curiosity are queen if you want to have a healthy relationship.

It is essential to spend shared intentional time together. Some things that you might do:

  • Read a relationship book. There are many out there. I wrote one called ”Being Together: Practical Wisdom for Loving Yourself and Your Partner.” Also, Stan Tatkin’s “Wired for Love” gives a great introduction to emotional relating or attachment styles.

  • Do your own self-care.

  • Take walks together in nature.

  • Engage in a non-sexual connection like a foot, hand or face massage.

  • Build things together as a couple. Acknowledge your successes together!

  • Grow your shared sacred space. Clean the room and light a candle or two. Preparation is half the equation. Have some quiet pillow time together and whisper.

These are just a few of the suggestions that we came up with. The main thing is to put the time on your calendar and remember to put people before things. Making the effort to say good night and good morning especially when you go to sleep at different times create connections that are healing in a relationship.

If you have a Rare child who is an adult you might schedule time during the day to be together. Alone time for parents can be very hard to come by especially when you are parenting a Rare child.

Coming Up

This week we will discuss the importance of being  committed in a relationship. Making a commitment to your partner where you are “all in” does wonders. Sometimes it can be scary and you might feel trapped so you leave the back door ajar. Together we will look at what changes when you close the exits and rest into your relationship. It’s a container that holds you both as Rare parents.

Receive Support

We would love to meet you and offer our support to you and your family. This is an opportunity to come together with other Rare Mothers in an intimate setting. There are Rare Mothers who are at the beginning of their journey and others who are at the end. We are a wise community of women who meet on Tuesday mornings at 10am PST. Please join us
