Building Your Team

Padma Gordon

Being in a relationship is a commitment and it takes energy, and even more energy for Rare Mothers. You already have your hands full navigating your child’s care, working, and managing your household. Having a strong and highly functional team is incredibly important.

It can be easy to become frustrated or anticipate disappointment rather than appreciating all that your team (your partner, your friends, your family members, your medical team, and so on) brings to the table. Perhaps if your partner or a friend cleans up from a meal or goes to the pharmacy to pick up medication, you can pause and thank them. The little gratitudes add up.

The Pause

Pausing means slowing down, taking a deep breath and looking into their eyes. Recognizing that you have a teammate in this life. You have someone who has your back, holds you when you feel like you’re falling apart and cheers you on as you champion your Rare child’s care in a doctor's office.

It can be easy to take each other for granted and appreciation is a conscious practice. Appreciation is good for the body and soul. You as the woman of the house are the leader of your team. You are the team captain and your teammates look to you for guidance.

Lead with Appreciation

The invitation is to lead with a spirit of appreciation and generosity. When you do, your team will follow suit. Appreciation will stabilize your partnership. People go where they are wanted and stay where they are valued.
