Walking With Courage
Padma Gordon
Being a Rare Mother takes courage. Are you aware of how courageous you are and are you willing to embrace it? Courage was the theme of our Spiritual Self-care Workshop this past week and it invited a rich discussion.
We have an opportunity to feed courage rather than fear. When fear arises, take a moment to feel and breathe.
Positive Self-Talk Works
A practice you might try is talking to yourself in a positive way rather than falling prey to the inner critic and the swirling thoughts that accompany fear. When you feel afraid, it's a chance to be courageous. What if you allow yourself to do the thing you're afraid of anyway?Take a moment to encourage yourself to go for it.
Kathryn, one of the Rare Mothers in our workshop told a story about the fear that arose in her as she was driving, looked in her rearview mirror to find that her son had a bloody nose and was smearing the blood all over his face. Inside she was panicking and wanted to pull over and yet there was no safe place to pull over on the freeway.
She dug deep inside and found her courage.
She eloquently said, “Courage squeezed everything out except for responsibility and love.“
Rare Mothers make a choice, a courageous choice to participate in life and to do what is needed.
Time for Yourself Serves
One of the things that is needed is to take time for yourself to fill up, to nourish yourself which makes you more available to your rare child and your family.
One of the wise elders in our community said that when her children were growing up and getting sicker and sicker, she would take time away every couple of months and go to a motel even though she could barely afford it. She would take time to retreat, to write and get her brain organized.
It takes courage to step away from your family and show up for yourself as a Rare Mother. You are worth it.
Join Us
Come and join us in our Spiritual Self-Care Workshop and be nourished. Give yourself a chance to be seen and heard by other Rare Mothers who "get" you. It is a chance to be reminded that you are not alone. We meet on Tuesday mornings at 10 AM Pacific Time. We do a short meditation followed by some journaling and then have an open conversation. Please bring a pen and paper. Come as you ARE. Come late. All are welcome.
